Ok, I answered my own question. Turns out the boot loader can be firmware specific. So, the firmware I tried installing was not compatible with the older boot loader on the switch.

(Would be nice if Linksys indicated this on the download page.) I went ahead and flashed the switch with older firmware, which got me back to a working state. Then I flashed the boot loader to the newest version, then upgraded the firmware. Biohazard Band Live. One other thing to note, you can only flash one item at a time. Trying to flash both in the same session assures a broken switch. I also found TFTP to be a more reliable (and transparent) method to flash, rather than the Web based HTTP upload utility. Finally, some people had questions about Xmodem.

It's a file transfer protocol built into HyperTerminal and other terminal applications, so just select it and you will bring up a dialogue box which allows you to browse for the file you wish to upload. It's a nice recovery feature Linksys built in, but be warned Xmodem is painfully slow. About 40 minutes for a 3MB file.
